Know before you go to Greece

My first trip to Greece was the start of my 3-week long adventure in Asia, but in Greece, my first stop was Athens, the amazing capital city of this ancient country. There are a number of islands that are famous for their beaches and natural features, while others have a significant nightlife scene or strong cultural traditions.

Mykonos and Santorini are one of the most popular tourist destinations in terms of Greek islands and are famed for their incredible beaches and world-renowned party scene.

Best time to visit Greece?

In my opinion, the best time to travel to Greece is between April and May. The weather is perfect for outdoor adventures, and you’ll have the Greek Islands to yourself before the summer crowds arrive.

The one event you need to plan your trip around is the Easter weekend. It’s an incredibly busy time in the country and hotels are often booked up a few weeks in advance.

If you’re traveling Greece on a budget or you want to avoid the crowds, the winter months are the best time to visit. The top attractions are empty of other tourists, and you won’t have a problem finding cheap flights and hotel deals.

What to expect in Greece

Language spoken in Greece

The official language in Greece is Greek. But you will have a very easy time communicating in English if needed.

Currency used in Greece

As Greece is in the European Union, its official currency is the Euro.

Credit Cards and ATMs

You can find ATMs all over Greece. Every major town and city will have a couple, and all the inhabited islands have at least one machine. You can use your credit card to pay for most purchases at shops and hotels, but you might come across a few bars that don’t have a working credit card machine.

Is Greece safe?

I think that Greece is very safe for any type of travelers, but as always I would highly recommend taking out travel insurance just in case.

Cost of food in Greece

When talking about food in Greece you have to think of olives, fresh vegetables, bread, feta cheese and much more. Mid-range restaurants will cost you around 10 to 20 Euros depending on the city that you are visiting, more luxury restaurants can get up to 35 Euros per meal.

If you like quick and cheap bites, there are always things like gyros which cost around 3 to 6 Euros. Also, groceries are pretty cheap in Greece, therefore, you can cook for yourself if you have a kitchen.
